iCanWrite app for iPhone and iPad
Developer: Fiendsoft
First release : 12 Feb 2009
App size: 103.47 Kb
Give your kids a boost as they start to learn to write - a fun way for them to learn to produce letters.
They can work from preset groups of letters or you can enter groups for them to use, perhaps re-enforcing their school scheme. They can also try any collection of letters they want - great for learning to write their name, for example.
Letters are shown one at a time with a demonstration. Once the letter is traced correctly the next letter is shown.
At the end of the sequence the results are shown as handwriting to give a great sense of achievement.
The handwriting piece can be grabbed using the standard screen shot feature (hold home and press power), allowing you or the child to include their masterpiece in notes, greetings cards or whatever you want.
Tested on my own 3 year old and produced under the guidance of an experienced reception (kindergarten) teacher this product boosts confidence and promotes fun with learning!

This app isnt very good. My three yr old daughter tries to trace the letter, but everytime she lifts her fingers and goes back to trace the letter the arrow still follows it and if it looks like three random lines, it will tell her its correct, because the arrow followed her fingers that way. I dont like this app at all.
We are a homeschooling family and Ive been searching the app store for the best educational apps. This was one of the first I downloaded and it remains my favorite. When I show off my new iPod Touch, this app is always the one that gets parents and homeschoolers excited about the possibilities of this gadget. This inexpensive little app has drawn my kids in and helped them improve in one of their least favorite subjects (penmanship). I have to disagree with the review concerned about problems with lifting your finger; with this style of handwriting you shouldnt be taking your finger off the surface, so I find this app to be IDEAL for helping to retrain my older children in the basics of proper letter formation as we prepare to learn cursive. The style of printing in this app is just one of many styles of handwriting, so you do need to recognize the style may conflict with how you were taught or how your child is being taught to print. Although Im no expert on the subject, I believe that a program like this would really help to make the brain/body connection for kinesthetic learners. The price of the app is less than you would spend on any handwriting workbook, plus its reusable and customizable. I would be very excited to see a cursive letter app as well as other printing style apps. What could improve this app: a mention somewhere of the particular style of handwriting used in the app, making a few letters a bit less finicky (I personally cant seem to get the letter d right, but others dont seem to have this problem!)
No upper case option. Shouldnt kids Learn those first?!? A little disappointing to say the least.
This ap is a great idea but it would be even better if there was an option for uppercase letters, if the ap told you what the letter was before tracing it, and if there were numbers as well.
My students need lots of repetition so it would be nice if the student could stay on same letter, also a voice saying the letter would be good.. One last thing, there should be no curlicues on the letters...just straight manuscript. Any additions to the letters are confusing. Im not sure what a couple of the letters are. This is a really helpful app overall. I like it.
